Citybikes Online Shop - cheap city bikes for men & women

City bikes, also called city bikes, have to meet many requirements. They should be suitable for everyday use, carry luggage, be as maintenance-free as possible and of course look good. City bikes offer an upright and comfortable riding position. This also explains why city bikes are mostly bought by women and the generation 50+.

City as a field of application: the (safety) equipment must fit

Since city bikes - as the name suggests - are mainly used in the city, for the way to work, for shopping or for smaller tours at the weekend, they usually meet the requirements of the road traffic regulations. This means that they are equipped with a dynamo-operated lighting system, have long mudguards, if possible with a splash spoiler so that shoes do not get wet in the rain, a luggage rack, reflective spotlights on the pedals and spokes, and front and rear brakes that can be operated separately. A comfortable, upright sitting position is guaranteed by the handlebars, which are usually pulled strongly towards the rider and have pleasantly grippy finned grips. The shape of the handlebars on a city bike is therefore not dissimilar to a Dutch bike. The usually low step-in is found to be particularly pleasant by older riders and women. Further comfort on a city bike is usually provided by a suspension fork and / or a suspension seatpost.

The intended use determines whether derailleur or hub gears

Hub gears are becoming more and more popular for city bikes. However, if you live on a slope, prefer faster speeds and a finer balance of gears, a derailleur is recommended. In flat regions, however, an 8-speed hub gear is also sufficient and requires less maintenance. A compromise between a 27-speed derailleur and an 8-speed hub would be an 11-speed freewheel hub. It is sporty even with a lot of luggage, also leaves nothing to be desired on the mountain and only has the disadvantage that it is significantly more expensive than a cheaper derailleur.

Brake system, luggage solution, entry and saddle as further criteria

Good brakes are an absolute must for every city bike. Hydraulic rim brakes offer excellent braking performance even in wet conditions. On some city bikes, the coaster brake integrated in the hub gears is supplemented by a rim brake. Wide tyres combined with a suspension seat post and suspension forks smooth out potholes and kerbs effortlessly and make city bikes great fun to ride even on bumpy terrain. High-quality city bikes also score points for their luggage solutions. Some manufacturers install luggage racks with tension straps similar to those on Dutch bikes, others offer racks with spring flaps and pannier systems, turning a city bike into a bike suitable for touring. Still other city bike luggage racks have struts so that even larger panniers and shopping can be fixed effortlessly. Frame-fixed luggage racks offer additional stability for city bikes. However, if the luggage load on the city bike is too high, the bike will be somewhat rear-heavy and this may impair the riding characteristics. Since city bikes are primarily designed for short distances, they are usually equipped with somewhat softer saddles than is the case, for example, with a road bike or mountain bike. Given the upright riding position on a city bike, a softer saddle feels wonderfully comfortable. If you want to take your children with you on your city bike, make sure that your bike allows you to attach a child seat and that there are no annoying cables running along the outside of the seat tube. A low step-in is recommended for senior citizens. Since city bikes are often ridden in summer and winter, they should be as low-maintenance as possible. Encapsulated hub gears provide better protection against rain, dirt and salt than open derailleurs.

What else distinguishes a good city bike?

Whether a suspension fork makes sense for you or not depends on where you primarily want to ride. If you want to use your city bike on natural trails or are tired of being shaken by cobblestones in the old town, then it makes sense to invest in a suspension fork. Some city bikes come with additional components: Under-mounted rear lights on the luggage rack (protects the rear light against damage when manoeuvring or transporting), chain guard (makes the chain less susceptible to maintenance and protects your trousers from dirt), brake handles lined with soft plastic (you don't have to grip cold metal when pulling), ergonomically shaped brake handles for a better grip, anti-rust chain, hub dynamos instead of noisy rim dynamos, adjustable suspension on the head tube, 11-speed instead of 7- or 8-speed hub gears, lighting system with LEDs instead of halogen headlights or twinkling bulbs. Admittedly, additional components on a city bike cost extra, but they also bring a lot in terms of riding pleasure and safety. Good city bikes start at just under 500 euros, and good equipment and a lot of performance for a fair price can also be found in the lower price segment. Modern city bikes also look good. Bright colours, unusual designs and retro looks can be found as well as classic white and matt black. Given the variety of brands and models on the city bike market, everyone should be able to find their dream bike.
