Bike Bags buy cheap in Bike Bag Shop

When someone goes on a journey, he can tell a story. I can still remember my first little bicycle. It was yellow black and tiny and had an equally tiny bicycle bag attached to the saddle. Along with the monstrous bell, this little bicycle bag was my pride and joy, because in it I could stow away all the treasures I found on the way when I went on a bicycle tour with my parents. My bike already had a luggage rack, but no real bike bags yet. On the rack I usually had my beloved teddy bear, which was already missing an eye and looked pretty battered. My second bike was already a lot bigger, also had a luggage rack and was equipped with all the components that make a child's bike suitable for everyday use and traffic.

The first bicycle bags

While the bike rides on my "tiger bike" felt like days and in reality lasted just a few hours, I was already taken on longer tours on my next bigger child's bike. So I got my first bicycle bags. My teddy still had to come along, even though I would never have admitted this to my friends. Instead of jamming him brutally on the pastry rack as I used to do, I stowed him in one of the two bicycle panniers. Better to do without a pair of trousers than my teddy. The bicycle bags were immensely practical. You could snap them onto the luggage rack with a flick of the wrist and attach them to the bottom of the rear wheel with an elastic strap. Since I was still small, my parents had naturally stowed most of my luggage in their bicycle panniers. My father had a bicycle pannier that always reminded me of a saddle. That's why I used to call his bike a horse, because when he would heave the two bike panniers onto his rack in the morning, he looked like a cowboy swinging the saddle on his horse. My parents' bicycle panniers were ingenious. No matter how much you put in them, there always seemed to be room inside. Almost like Hermione's handbag in Harry Potter. What's more, the bike bags were absolutely waterproof. When I think of how often we were caught in the rain on the road. If all our luggage had been soaked, I can't imagine. I probably would have refused to ride on after the first downpour. My father had stowed our repair kit and tools in a small saddle bag. So these important utensils were always at hand. My mother also had a handlebar bag. This handlebar bag had a transparent compartment at the top for the map. The rest of the space in the handlebar bag was taken up by the entire contents of her handbag, and that wasn't exactly little.

Not every bike is suitable for bicycle bags

In my early 20s, I went on my first bike tour abroad with a fellow student. In Ireland, we wanted to cycle along the east coast from Dublin to Cork. What I hadn't considered at the time was the fact that not every bike that has a rack is suitable for longer bike tours. I had great panniers and everything else you need for the trip, but a totally unsuitable bike. The weight of the panniers was far too much for the bike. At the time, I had a fairly cheap ladies' bike with a low step-in and curved handlebars. The bike was sufficient for a trip to the bakery, but completely unsuitable for a longer bike trip. The weight of the panniers on the rack changed the bike's handling to such an extent that I could barely keep up with my fellow student. The end result was that we parted company in Rosslare in bad faith. I rode back on the ferry with my bike and the panniers, she continued alone to Cork. For later bike tours, this experience was a lesson for me.

The small fine solution: saddle bike bags

My husband is also passionate about cycling. When we met, he owned a sleek road bike and an old push bike for the way to university. Since his racing bike couldn't have an ounce too much, but he always wanted to have his repair kit with him, he bought a practical little bicycle bag that he could attach to the seat post of his bike with a click system. This fastening system was simply ingenious, because not only could his small bicycle bag be attached to this holder, but larger bicycle bags could also be mounted on the bike with a flick of the wrist. If you stopped somewhere for a rest, you could remove the bike bag in no time and attach it again just as quickly after the rest. The holder itself is simply left on the bike. Even weight fetishists among racing cyclists have such holders on their racing bikes so that they can take small bike bags with them.

For our first bike tour together, my husband and I bought high-quality trekking bikes. Given my experience in Ireland, I knew that for a longer bike tour you not only need good bike bags, but also a high-quality and robust bike to which you can then attach these great bags. We have never regretted this investment. Even after 15 years and thousands of kilometres on the saddle, the bikes are still too good for us to part with them. The panniers are also still in tip-top condition. My husband has bicycle panniers with a roll closure. These bags are still as waterproof today as they were back then. Thanks to the high-quality workmanship, our luggage is always safe and dry in them.

Luggage solutions for the front wheel help with space problems

For smaller bike tours, we usually only take one bike bag. If we have more luggage, we mount the second pannier on the bike and if that is not enough, we buy a luggage solution for the front wheel. However, we don't always have this attachment system mounted. Only when our normal bicycle bags are not enough, it is mounted so that we can take additional bicycle bags with us. If you also want to attach bags to the front of the bike, you should make sure that the luggage is not too heavy. Otherwise the bike will start to lurch. A rule of thumb is 2/3 to 1/3, i.e. the rear panniers should carry 2/3 of the weight and the front panniers only 1/3.

Vario bike bags: from bike bag to backpack

As I said, our bike bags are still in good shape. Nevertheless, we have of course also flirted with buying new panniers. We were particularly taken with Vario panniers. Vario bicycle panniers are "egg-laying lambs' milk sows". They can be transformed into fully-fledged backpacks. Especially on steep descents, such bike bags offer the advantage that you can carry them on your back. Then the space on the luggage rack is free and you can easily shift your weight to the back by moving your buttocks behind the saddle. When you take a break, you can simply shoulder the panniers and take them with you. Of course, you might be tempted to do that. Our old bicycle bags also have no reflective strips at all. In the past, manufacturers didn't think about such practical aids. Today, reflective strips on bicycle bags and panniers - whether mounted on the front or the back of the bike - are standard equipment for renowned manufacturers. This means that you are always clearly visible to other road users even at dusk and in poor visibility conditions, because the bicycle panniers themselves may conceal the spotlights and reflective strips mounted on the bike.
