Everyone who rides their bike a lot naturally wants to know how many kilometres they have actually ridden. The need to measure distances travelled and top speeds is not a phenomenon of the 21st century. On the contrary, the desire to record this data was already felt by cyclists at the end of the 19th century. The first odometer - the ancestor of today's bicycle computers - was developed by a man named Veeder in 1895. This first odometer was a simple mechanical device that counted the number of wheel revolutions. The number of wheel revolutions was transmitted via a cable to an analogue bicycle speedometer, which was mounted in the rider's field of vision. The bicycle speedometer converted the number of wheel revolutions into kilometres cycled according to a predefined formula. In principle, many of today's bicycle computers still work in the same way. Veeder promoted his first bicycle computer with the slogan "It's nice to know how far you go", which translates as "Good to know how far you've gone". After this bicycle speedometer became more and more popular, other manufacturers also recognised the financial potential of this product. The bicycle speedometer was further developed and soon had a speed display in addition to the kilometre display.

There are two groups in the bicycle computer fan community

Roughly speaking, it can be said that today's bike computer fan community can be divided into two groups. On the one hand, there are the freaks who want to have every detail, no matter how small, precisely listed, and on the other hand, the average citizen who is satisfied with knowing how fast, how far and how long he has ridden. Simple bike computers already show a lot of information for little money: the speed just ridden, the maximum speed ridden over the course of a route, the length of the route just ridden, the length of all routes ridden so far and the date and time. For ambitious cyclists, this data is not enough. They want a bike computer that, in addition to the time, date, distance, speed and total distance, also offers them the average speed, the metres of altitude gained (uphill and downhill separately), the calories burned, the cadence, the power output in watts, the heart rate, the temperature and, if possible, a stopwatch function.

What the bike computer can do

The display of a bike computer or bike tachometer is usually an LCD display. Depending on the size of the display, it shows one or more values simultaneously. Modern and high-quality cycle computers show one value - e.g. the speed just ridden - in large digits and another value that each rider can set individually for their needs or training purposes - e.g. the time, distance or average speed - in small digits. The housing of the bike computer usually has one or more buttons that the rider can press, for example, to switch between the individual functions and data, reset values such as the time or distance, calibrate the bike computer according to the circumference of the bike or switch on a backlight for the display. Older traditional cycle computers have a magnet attached to a spoke on the front or rear wheel. A sensor attached to the fork or rear frame then records when the magnet passes per wheel revolution. This signal is then transmitted via a cable to the control unit, where it is converted into the corresponding values. Where cables were wound in the past, they are now transmitted wirelessly.

Thanks to digital technology, other devices can be connected. Many bike computers can be supplemented with accessories. There are chest straps for measuring heart rate and cadence monitors. Technically more complex bike computers are able to measure the cyclist's power output in watts. These devices contain elements that measure the torque on the crank or rear hub, or the pull on the chain.

Readability of the data and ease of use are particularly important

Whether you are looking for an all-rounder or a simple bike computer, the important thing with all devices is that the data must be easy to read. What good is a high-tech bike computer if the data on the display cannot be read? If you ride a lot in the dark or in poor lighting conditions, you will also appreciate the advantages of a display illumination. Another important factor to consider before buying a bike computer is the ease of use. If you want a lot of functions, you must of course be mentally prepared for the fact that operating a bike computer becomes more complicated with each additional function. Intuitive menu navigation and good readability of the data on the display should therefore be at the top of every buyer's wish list for a bike computer. It should also be possible to operate the buttons of a bike computer while wearing gloves, because even in winter you want to know how far or fast you have cycled. For those who not only want to read their data on the bike computer, but also analyse it on the computer, the market naturally offers a large selection of bike computers with the option of data transfer and data storage.

The right speedometer for every cyclist

Ambitious cyclists who need more than just the basic functions use the possibilities of today's bike computers to optimise their training. Their own performance level can thus be read at any time on the basis of the distance travelled, the average speed, the heart rate or the altitude metres. It can also be very useful for the average person to be able to read their heart rate. This prevents you from overexerting yourself and damaging your health in time. However, if you can do without altimeter, cadence or calorie consumption and similar bells and whistles and are satisfied with the basic functions such as speed, distance and riding time, you can choose from a wealth of uncomplicated and intuitively operated bike computers.

Modern bike computers meet a wide range of requirements. For mountain bikers, there are models that are so protected that they function optimally even in rough terrain when the going gets really tough. An air pressure gauge measures the metres of altitude ridden, so that precise altitude profiles can be created after the tour and changes in the weather are immediately recognisable. For racing cyclists, there are high-tech bike tachometers that, in addition to the usual functions, also determine the individual training load and the required regeneration time.

Taste, intended use and budget determine the selection of a bike computer

With such a wealth of data, nothing is left to chance. Even things like the timely intake of food and fluids no longer have to be thought of by the ambitious athlete. This is automatically communicated by means of innovative reminder functions on the bike computer. Bicycle computers for professionals are even available with GPS function. Easy-to-use cycle computers for occasional cyclists that display basic functions such as speed, time and partial and total distance are already available for about 10 euros. If you are willing to spend more, you will find a wide range of high-quality devices with a wealth of functions for between 30 and 80 euros. Compact bike computers with GPS function are available for as little as 100 euros. However, if you don't want to do without touchscreen operation, topographic maps, temperature display and barometric altimeter, you will have to dig a little deeper into your wallet. In the end, buying a bike computer is all a question of purpose, taste and the available budget.
