Bike thieves are usually after a quick prey. If your bike's lock cannot be broken within a few minutes, you can assume that the thief will leave your bike and choose another potential victim. According to statistics, 95 percent of all bicycle thefts are the work of casual thieves and only a small percentage are stolen by professional thieves. If a thief can see from a distance that he will have a hard time picking a bike lock, that usually deters him.

The very position of the bicycle is a deterrent to thieves

But it's not just the quality of the lock that deters potential thieves; where you park your bike and how you lock it are also important. First of all, you should never park your bike in any dark places. It is best to look for a parking place where there is a lot of pedestrian traffic, because many people also mean many potential witnesses. If you are going to the cinema, for example, it is not a good idea to park your bike directly in front of the cinema. Then any thief can work out how long he has to pick the lock. It's better to park your bike a bit further away, e.g. in front of a restaurant or pub. Then your sudden appearance must be expected at any time. The bike lock that may be pre-installed on your bike alone will not stop a thief. Invest in an additional lock. Professional thieves usually specialise in certain locks. If your bike is secured with two different bike locks, experience has shown that this will deter many a thief.

Price and quality are decisive when buying a bicycle lock

Bicycle locks come in all price ranges and quality levels. It is recommended to invest about 10 percent of the value of your bike in a bike lock. Your bike should be worth that. Remember, the longer it takes a thief to pick your bike lock, the greater the risk that someone will see him stealing it. Whether you use one or two bike locks, always lock your bike to a fixed object. Because only if you not only lock your bike but also chain it to a secure object (e.g. lamppost, fence, bicycle stand) can someone not simply take your bike away. The object you chain your bike to should also be of a certain height. Even a heavy Dutch bicycle can be lifted easily over a 1 metre high post. Some lock cylinders can be opened effortlessly by professionals. The only thing thieves need is the right tools. So only use high-quality bicycle locks that have been tested by independent institutes (e.g. Stiftung Warentest) and found to be good. Needless to say, the best bicycle lock will only protect your bike from theft if you have it with you. In this respect, bicycle locks with a holder have proven their worth. This way, your lock is securely fastened even while riding and does not rattle. Your bike will also not be damaged by a slipping chain and will not hinder you while riding.

Different bicycle locks for different uses

The following bicycle locks are available: U-locks, chain locks, folding locks, armoured cable locks, spiral locks, cable locks, frame locks. Frame locks are practical and are already fitted as standard by many manufacturers - with the exception of racing bikes. The advantage of a frame lock is that you always have it with you. However, it can also be easily broken and the bike itself can be easily carried away when locked. If you have to go to the bakery or to the shops, a frame lock is usually sufficient. However, it would be safer to buy another bike lock so that you can also lock your bike to a fixed object. Cable and spiral locks have the advantage that they are cheap to buy and relatively light. They also take up little space and are therefore effortless to take with you. But because of their small diameter, these bicycle locks do not really deter potential thieves.

But cable and spiral locks make sense as a second lock or when you go shopping. The bigger brother of a spiral or cable lock is the armoured cable lock. It is more stable and durable than its little brother, can be transported just as easily, is also relatively inexpensive and already offers significantly more deterrence.

Even more secure than cable locks are chain locks. They consist of thick hardened chain links. As a rule, the chain links of a bicycle lock are enclosed in a sturdy synthetic fibre casing so as not to damage the paintwork of the bicycle. The chain, the housing and all load-bearing parts of the locking mechanism are made of specially hardened steel. The lock cylinder offers protection against manipulation (new German: Picking). Chain locks can be attached to the bike or, if they are long enough, casually slung around the waist while riding. They offer good protection against a high risk of theft and are recommended for securing high-quality bicycles. Chain locks are more flexible than U-locks due to their shape and, depending on their length, can also be tied around objects with a large diameter.

Bolt locks consist of a U-shaped solid steel shackle and a lock body. The shackle of the bicycle lock is made of a steel mix. It is hardened on the outside and slightly softer on the inside to provide sufficient protection against ice spray. U-locks are among the safest bicycle locks available. When buying a U-lock, make sure that the shackle is long enough so that you can not only lock but also unlock your bike. High-quality U-locks are usually sold with the appropriate brackets that can be attached to the seat post or the frame of the bike. High-quality U-locks cannot be broken by brute force or picking tools and are therefore also recommended by independent institutions such as Stiftung Warentest.

The same applies to the bicycle locks described below, the folding locks. Along with U-locks, folding locks are among the porsches among bicycle locks. They have only been on the bicycle accessories market for a relatively short time. A folding lock can be folded up like a folding rule, stowed in a bag provided and attached to the bike. Folding locks are made of special steel, are available in different lengths and can be used flexibly due to their shape. At a length of 100 cm, such a lock can weigh a hefty 1.6 kg, but it also offers maximum theft protection.

Security levels of different manufacturers help with the purchase decision

Renowned manufacturers of bicycle locks such as ABUS, Trelock and Kryptonite have divided their locks into security levels. These are not uniform, but the higher the security level, the more secure the bicycle lock. Understandably, not only the weight of the lock increases with the security level, but also the price. Even the best lock cannot completely prevent theft, but it can at least make it extremely difficult. A good bicycle lock is therefore always a sensible investment.
