Sits, fits, wobbles and has air. This is how you could describe a bicycle pump, although we hope that the air pump on your bike fits and has air, but does not wobble. So that you don't run out of fun and your tyre doesn't run out of air, you should always have a bicycle pump with you.

Frame pumps or mini pumps that are easy to stow have proven themselves for on the road. Frame pumps can be easily attached to the bike, while mini pumps fit into even the smallest bag. For stationary use at home, floor pumps and foot pumps have proved their worth. They are of course larger and therefore take up more space than mini pumps, but on the other hand you can inflate a tyre much faster with them than with an average mini pump. As a rule, bicycle pumps lead a rather meagre existence in the depths of our bicycle bags or are attached to the bike in such a way that we hardly notice them. We only become aware of their importance when we have a flat tyre because we have run over a piece of broken glass, a nail or some other sharp object. If you don't have a repair kit, spare inner tube or bicycle pump with you in such a situation, you will have to make your way home true to the motto "if you love your bike, you push it".

A tyre loses air all the time, even without a flat

Without a doubt, the bicycle tyre is the most stressed component on the bike. Tyres lose air sooner or later, even without a flat tyre. The air pressure on the bicycle tyre should therefore be checked regularly. Only when a tyre is optimally inflated will it roll smoothly. Having a flat tyre is usually frustrating, but it is no reason to blow up immediately. However, if your tyre loses air more often, there may be several reasons. Not only thorns, broken glass or other sharp objects can cause a flat tyre, but also heat or cold can affect the tyre.

How to change a bicycle inner tube properly

Changing an inner tube is not difficult, but you should have practised it before you set out on a long bike ride. Because according to Murphy, if you have a flat tyre, there's no garage nearby. It is best to turn your bike upside down before changing the inner tube. First let the air out of the tyre, then release the brake and quick release to remove the wheel from the front fork or rear frame.

In your tool bag there should be at least 3 small plastic tyre pullers.Put the first tyre puller between the tyre and the rim and attach the other end to a spoke, then take the second puller and put it into the slot created by the first tyre puller. Now pull the second puller clockwise a little along the rim and attach it to a spoke as well. Take the third tyre puller to detach the entire tyre casing from the rim. When the bicycle tyre has slipped all the way out over the rim, you can pull out the inner tube between the bicycle tyre and the rim. In the case of a real flat tyre, you should now check the outside and inside of the bicycle casing for foreign bodies and damage. What good is a new inner tube if the bottom of the flat is still stuck in the bicycle casing and would break the inner tube again after pumping it up. After checking the casing and also the rim tape, lightly inflate the new inner tube with the bicycle pump. Insert the valve through the opening provided in the rim and then pull the inner tube over the entire rim. Pay attention to the direction of travel of the inner tube. Finally, pull the cover back over the tube until it is firmly seated on the rim. If you use the puller, you will need a little less force. When the inner tube has completely disappeared under the casing again, you can continue to inflate it with the bicycle pump.

Then take the wheel and let it hit the ground a few times from a low height so that the tube is positioned evenly in the casing.
Only when you are completely sure that the tube is seated correctly, fully inflate the tube with the bicycle pump.

Mini bicycle pump or cartridge pump?

Even small bicycle pumps for on the road usually have a precise pressure gauge. This allows you to check the air pressure after changing the inner tube. When buying a bicycle pump, make sure that the pump has a universal pump head and fits different types of valves (i.e. car valve, Dunlop valve, Presta or French valve). If you don't have a bicycle pump with you because the extra weight bothers you, there's no helping you, because the current models hardly weigh anything. Lightweight bicycle pumps weighing less than 100 g are already available.

Cartridge pumps are recommended for cyclists for whom every second counts. With these bicycle pumps, you can inflate the tyre in no time at all without much effort. However, the cartridges must be replaced regularly. Admittedly, today's tyres are more puncture-proof than they used to be, but if you want to be on the safe side, you should never go on a bicycle tour without a bicycle pump or CO2 cartridge. Indisputably, the classic air pump is still the most reliable helper in an emergency. Because an air pump works everywhere. However, if you want to inflate the tyre of a road bike, you have to work hard and pump for a long time until you reach the high tyre pressure. To achieve 5 bar pressure with a mini pump, you really have to work up a sweat. With a cartridge system you save a lot of energy and power, provided that the gas gets from the cartridge into the hose safely and without loss.

Both pump systems thus have advantages and disadvantages. Mini bicycle pumps are reliable, cheap to buy, but cost effort and time. CO2 cartridge systems are light and small. You can inflate a tyre with them in no time at all, but sooner or later you will have to replace the cartridges with new ones.
