The category bicycle accessories roughly refers to all components that could be attached to a bicycle but are not absolutely necessary. A bicycle would ride even without extensive bicycle accessories. But as so often in life, useful little things often decide whether the big picture is really enjoyable or not.

Anyone who has ever ridden their bike on rough terrain in the rain and not had a mudguard fitted to their bike knows the advantages mudguards would have had in bad weather. Who wants to look like a chipmunk in the back. Cyclists who may be riding behind you also appreciate a mudguard on the bike of the rider in front. Mudguards not only keep dirt and grime off your own body, but also prevent cyclists riding close behind from getting splashed. Admittedly, they don't cut a good figure on racing bikes, but city and trekking bikes still look sporty even with mudguards.

An absolute must for transport, whether at the rear or the front: the luggage rack

Luggage racks are also considered bicycle accessories. They are usually attached to the rear wheel. However, there are also bike racks that are attached to the front wheel. If you want to transport a lot of luggage, you can also mount a luggage rack on the front and rear of your bike. This distributes the weight of the luggage more evenly over the bike. This improves the handling of the bike and thus also the riding pleasure. This category of bicycle accessories could also include luggage solutions for mountain bikes that are attached directly to the seat post.

Giving your bike the right stand

This small but fine cycling accessory provides information about the current speed and distance ridden, shows the average speed, time and sometimes even the calories burned. Bike computers are attached to the handlebars so that the rider can easily read the data even while riding. As with all cycling accessories, there are a myriad of products in this category to suit all tastes and budgets.

Securing your own bike against bike thieves

Have you ever had your bike stolen? Then you know how important a good bicycle lock is. Although bicycle locks are also part of bicycle accessories, i.e. components that are not absolutely necessary, everyone who wants to protect their bicycle against theft should nevertheless own one. Statistically, only about 10 % of all reported bicycle thefts are solved. In view of the fact that by no means all thefts are reported to the police, the clear-up rate is probably much lower. As a rule, bicycle thieves prefer a quick haul. But if you can see from a distance that a bicycle lock is difficult to break open, this increases the likelihood that a potential thief will not even be tempted. Kryptonite bicycle locks and bicycle locks that cannot be broken open with bolt cutters are considered secure. Of course, these bicycle accessories are only useful if you have them with you when you are out and about. Therefore, bicycle locks that can be attached to the bicycle are advantageous. This means extra weight, but the safety of your bike should be worth the extra weight.

When you run out of air: the only thing that helps is the air pump

A bicycle pump should also be part of the standard equipment of every bike. This bicycle accessory is also available in different sizes and price ranges: floor pumps for at home and small handy pumps that can be easily attached to the bicycle or stowed in the luggage. In addition to the bicycle pump, you should also have a spare inner tube, repair kit and bicycle tools in your luggage in case of a puncture. This is an absolute must, especially on longer tours. As a rule, you don't get a flat tyre in the immediate vicinity of a bicycle repair shop, but in the middle of nowhere.

There are also tools and care products for bicycles that everyone should have

Bike tools in the narrower sense include repair kits and one-piece folding tools with a variety of functions that you can easily attach to the seat post of your bike in a small pannier. Assembly stands and special tools such as crank pullers, on the other hand, are more likely to be found in the toolbox of professional and technically savvy "screwdrivers".

Like any vehicle, a bicycle requires a certain amount of care. You can significantly increase the service life of individual bicycle components if you clean and maintain your bicycle regularly. Of course, the bicycle accessories market also offers a wealth of care, cleaning and lubrication products in this area. Moving bicycle parts should be carefully maintained with special oils and greases. Grease-dissolving cleaning agents make it easier to clean the bicycle. In particular, bicycle parts that are subject to special stress, such as the bicycle chain, front derailleur, chainrings and rear derailleur should be subjected to regular maintenance and care. This reduces wear, prevents the chain from creaking and squeaking and thus increases the overall quality of the ride.

Bicycle bags to carry everything that is important to you

Bicycle bags - preferably waterproof -, backpacks ergonomically adapted to a man's or woman's back, bicycle trailers and child seats are also part of cycling accessories. Luggage can be conveniently stowed in special bicycle panniers that can be attached to the luggage rack or special bicycle backpacks. For longer tours and increased space requirements, the trade offers bicycle trailers in many price classes. For children, there are child seats that are usually attached to the seat tube or the rear frame. However, there are also mounting solutions where the child seat is mounted on the front of the bike. However, many cyclists prefer to pull their offspring behind them in a special bicycle trailer. These bicycle trailers are usually also suitable for jogging (baby joggers) and can therefore be used for a variety of purposes.

Let's move on to the useful small items. What would a ride in summer temperatures be without a drinking bottle attached to the frame and filled? A torture! Let's move on to the bell. As mentioned above, it is required by the STVO, but is rarely found on a road bike. However, many pedestrians would appreciate the sound of a bell to warn them of a road cyclist approaching from behind. Due to the "high" weight, however, many racing cyclists refuse to have a bell on their noble racing machine.
