Every bicycle should be cleaned and cared for regularly. High-quality bikes are basically insensitive and robust, but they are also exposed to wind and weather while riding. Dust and dirt settle on lubricants and then have the effect of sandpaper. Therefore, these parts in particular should be cleaned and maintained regularly to keep them running smoothly. When cleaning a bicycle, you can also check your bike for wear and damage at the same time. Many damages may not even be noticed when riding the bike, but can be detected if you examine the bike more closely when cleaning it.

To enjoy your bike for a long time, it should be cleaned properly at regular intervals

Cleaning is a nuisance, but basically simple. First remove the lubricants with a degreaser, then wash off dirt and grime with water and a cleaning agent. Once that is done, clean all moving parts, dry them and lubricate them again. For cleaning, you basically only need water, a detergent, oil, lubricant, a bucket, sponges, cloths, various hard brushes and a cassette scraper. Use the cassette scraper to remove dirt and debris from between the sprockets. Use the hard brush for the cassette. This will ensure that the degreaser gets into the spaces between the sprockets. You should leave the degreaser to work for a while¸ before rinsing it out again with soapy water or a special cleaning agent. You should then clean the rest of the wheel thoroughly from top to bottom with plenty of soapy water and a sponge. If you have brushes in different sizes, you can also remove dirt better from hard-to-reach places. Always rinse with clean water and then dry the bike thoroughly.

Maintenance, lubrication, oiling and greasing are a boon to any bike

After cleaning the wheel, it is time for care, lubrication, oiling and greasing. By applying lubricants and care products regularly, you prevent abrasion and wear. However, applying new oil and lubricants to old oils and lubricants is counterproductive. By doing so, you will only create an abrasive paste and damage your bike in the long run. Regularly drip light oil into the joints of the rear derailleurs. The chains should also be cleaned, dried and lubricated with a suitable lubricant after rides in the rain. Open bearings also need to be looked after. It is best to lubricate them with a special light wheel grease. Bottom brackets and hubs also require regular care if you often ride in the wet. To prevent the seat tube from sticking to the stem, you can use special release agents. Grease also works, but with carbon parts you should definitely use a release paste containing copper. Problems with the gears can be prevented by putting a few drops of light oil on dry Bowden cables from time to time. The same applies to sluggish brakes that take a long time to reapply.

Care and lubricants are available in tubes, bottles or cans as liquids or sprays. Fast-drying penetrating oils with Teflon particles are particularly recommended for the chain, gears and joints. Among the lubricants and care products there are also true "egg-laying lactic acid sows". They first clean and dissolve the dirt and when the solvent has evaporated, they form a thin lubricating and protective film.
