You don't always want to take your bike to the bike repair shop every time you have a small breakdown or flat tyre? Do you want to look after, maintain and repair your bike yourself? Then you need a suitable tool set or you have to assemble appropriate tools yourself. To be able to carry out maintenance and repair work on your bike, you also need enough space. The lighting should also be right.

A repair stand prevents annoying crawling around and brings the bike to eye level

To avoid always having to crawl or kneel on the ground when repairing your bike, you should get a repair stand. Then you will have your bike at eye level and the repair will be much quicker.

Use the tools to repair your bike.

When using the tools, you should always be careful when tightening them. Screws and nuts should be tightened firmly, but not slammed or completely overtightened. There are special torque spanners that allow you to read off the exact amount of tightening force. You can find the manufacturer's recommended tightening torques in your bike's instruction manual.

Budget tools may tempt you with their price, but they do not stand the test of time

Never buy cheap tools from discounters. You will not be happy with them. Cheap tools wear out more quickly, bend and, in the worst case, even cause damage to your bike.

With small additions, the basic tool quickly becomes an extensive tool assortment

You will already find your basic tools in your normal home toolbox: Hammer, screwdriver, Phillips head, combination pliers, pipe wrench, screwdrivers, etc.

Add a set of open-ended spanners to this normal tool kit. The 15 mm open-end spanner is suitable for fixing the pedals or for tensioning the chain on bolted rear axles. You will need the 8, 9 and 10 mm open-end spanners if you want to tighten or fix the bolts on your luggage rack, lamp or mudguards.A set of Allen spanners between 2 and 10 mm thick should also be in every toolbox. Use the long end of the Allen key if you have little space, for example. This is the case when mounting a bottle cage on the bicycle frame. Use the short part for tightening screws.Be sure to get a minitool for on the road. You can easily stow it in a saddle bag and it will be a great help on rides. Another tool that should not be missing is a pair of needle-nose pliers. They are very useful when you need to tighten or adjust cables. The pliers should be as narrow as possible so that they can be used in tight places. The jaw surfaces should be clean and free of grease.Since shift and brake cables need to be replaced, shortened or adjusted from time to time, you should also get yourself a Bowden cable cutter. The inside of this tool is also suitable for attaching cable end caps to brake cables to protect the latter from fraying.For repairs to the chain, bottom bracket and bicycle sprocket, you need the following tools: crank puller, crank spanner, chain rivet pusher, chain whip or cassette puller.

Whether it makes sense for you to invest in special tools depends on your skills as a "wrench" and the budget you are inclined to spend. Some special tools, such as tools for loosening the sprocket set, really go for the money and are more suitable for a specialist workshop.

Fixed locations avoid constant searching

One thing that is very important when screwing on the wheel is the following: Order is half the battle. Nothing is more annoying than constantly searching for the right tool. So determine an exact place for each tool and put it there again after each work step.

The order of disassembly is important for later reassembly

Memorise the exact sequence of parts when disassembling your bike, even when repairing and maintaining it. After all, you don't want to find out at the end of the repair that you still have a few screws left but don't even know where they belong anymore. And keep your tools clean and dry. Then you will be able to enjoy it for a long time.
