Whether on an intensive training ride or an enjoyable cycling excursion, every cyclist should always drink a sufficient amount of fluid on the road. Only those who regularly consume fluids in the form of mineral water, isotonic drinks, apple spritzer or herbal or fruit teas will remain healthy and able to perform. Even without sporting activities, everyone should drink at least 1.5 - 2 litres daily. During strenuous activities such as jogging or cycling, we consume additional energy, most of which is converted into heat. We start to sweat and as sweat evaporates on our body, it cools down again. In order for this "cooling cycle" to function smoothly and for our body to be cooled down to operating temperature again and again, we need to drink enough on the road to replace the minerals we sweat out. Otherwise, there is a risk of a drop in performance at best and muscle cramps and impaired consciousness at worst.

Fortunately, it is possible to drink a lot.

Unfortunately, you can replenish your fluid deficits and empty energy depots while cycling by grabbing your water bottle, which is handy in the water bottle holder, and taking a few sips regularly. Of course, it is also important that the water bottle can be securely fastened to the bike. Special bottle cages made of plastic, metal, aluminium or carbon ensure this. The bicycle trade even offers special bottle cages for left-handers, so that removing the bottle from the side is no longer a problem for them either.

Bottle holders are available in plastic or metal and carbon, which is half the weight

Carbon bottle cages are about half the weight of plastic or metal bottle cages, but they are also much more expensive. Nevertheless, these lightweights are an absolute must for all cyclists for whom every gram too much on the bike is a thorn in the eye. When choosing a water bottle cage, don't just look at the material. For example, some bottle cages are only suitable for aluminium drinks bottles, only for plastic drinks bottles or only for certain manufacturers of drinks bottles. It would be a shame if you bought a beautifully designed bottle cage, but your drinks bottle doesn't fit in it.

Special solutions for left-handers, fullys and women's bikes

Some water bottle cages allow you to remove the bottle from the side. This is not only interesting for left-handers, but also for those who own a bike with a compact, ladies or full frame. Due to the frame geometry, these bikes offer little space for bottle cages. But if you can take out your water bottle from the side, the top tube standing in the way is no longer a nuisance.

There are, however, special adapters for bicycles with bottle cage holes for this problem. Such a bottle cage adapter allows the bottle cage attached to it to swivel out 15 degrees in both directions. This is also a super solution for fullys or ladies' bikes.

Bottle holders for handlebars or saddle rails even allow you to carry a tool bottle

But bottle cages can be attached to more than just the frame. On bikes that do not have bottle cage holes, you can attach the bottle cage to the saddle rail or handlebar instead. The bottle cages that are attached to the saddle rail usually offer space for two drinks bottles or one drinks bottle and one tool bottle. This way you not only have your drink but also your most important tools always at hand, because tool bottles offer enough space for an inner tube, a minitool, repair kit and three plastic tyre levers.

Whichever solution you choose, the important thing is that the water bottle is securely stowed in the water bottle holder, does not rattle and is easy to reach without having to take your eyes off the road or traffic.
