Thirst is worse than homesickness. Anyone who rides a bike a lot and for a long time can tell you a thing or two about it. If you consider that the body already loses up to 1.2 litres of fluid and approx. 0.5 percent common salt during medium exertion and normal ambient temperature, you can roughly imagine how high the fluid loss can be only during intensive exertion such as cycling. However, since the body can only absorb a maximum of 0.8 litres of fluid per hour, you should drink regularly before, during and after exercise to make up for the loss of fluids and minerals. Fluid deficits mean at best a drop in performance and at worst dizziness, circulatory problems, vomiting and muscle cramps.

To prevent this, experienced cyclists always carry a water bottle filled with mineral-rich water, unsweetened herbal or fruit teas, isotonic beverages or apple spritzer.

These drinks bottles can be conveniently transported in a drinks bottle holder that is attached to the bike. As a rule, every bike has holes on the frame to which you can attach a bottle cage. This way you always have the water bottle at hand while riding and can drink regularly in small sips. Because many athletes drink too little overall and when they do drink, they drink too much at once. Thanks to the water bottle on the bike, you can drink small amounts in sips at regular intervals. You should do this even if you don't really feel thirsty. Because by then it is usually too late. The performance curve is already going down then.

Whether made of polyethylene, aluminium or precious metal is a matter of taste

Most commercially available drinks bottles for bicycles are made of plastic, or more precisely polyethylene. There are also drinking bottles made of aluminium or precious metal. Since you want to enjoy the drink and are not interested in the taste of the bottle itself, it is advisable to make sure that the bottle is BPA-free. Some manufacturers call this "TruTaste" polypropylene. In simpler terms, this means that these drinking bottles are absolutely tasteless and antibacterial. If you prefer carbonated drinks, you should make sure that the drinking bottle is also suitable for such drinks.

Self-closing valves guarantee fast drinking pleasure without liquid leakage

Modern drinks bottles for cyclists usually have self-closing valves, so-called jet valves. They do not allow any liquid to escape even when open and, thanks to their high liquid flow rate, guarantee that you can enjoy your drink quickly without having to fiddle with the cap for a long time. Special mouthpieces also allow for easy dosing. If you like to mix your own drinks, you should also make sure that the drinks bottle has a relatively large opening through which you can fill it with powdered drinks or ice cubes if necessary. It goes without saying that a bicycle bottle should be leak-proof.

If you want your drink to stay at a constant temperature, buy a water bottle with special insulation. Insulated bottles keep cold drinks pleasantly cool for a long time, and warm drinks warm in winter.

The drinking bottle should be easy and quick to clean

Furthermore, the drinking bottle should be easy to clean. Otherwise, you run the risk that the bottle will start to smell unpleasant after a while. Some drinking bottles have the habit of taking on the smell of the drink. And who wants to drink mineral water from a bottle that smells like herbal tea? Dishwasher-safe drinking bottles are easy to clean and prevent unpleasant odours. When cleaning, don't forget to clean the mouthpiece of the bottle. Residue tends to accumulate on the valve, which can develop a life of its own in the form of mould and fungus in the long run. There are disinfectants for drinking bottles, but why complicate things if you can do them easily? If you want to be on the safe side, get yourself a brush set with which you can hygienically clean drinking bottles and valves as well as the hoses of drinking tube systems.

Drinking tube systems are ideal for long tours

Which brings us to the topic: For triathletes and ambitious cyclists, there are drinking tube systems that can be screwed onto standard PET drinking bottles. For these PET bottles, there are suitable bottle cages that always have a secure grip even on bottles that are filled to the brim. This solution is ideal for long tours or hot summer days and is recommended for ambitious bikers who know how important a balanced mineral supply is.
