To wear a helmet or not to wear a helmet, that is the question. No topic related to bicycles is discussed more controversially. Every year, compulsory helmets for cyclists are threatened, but then not enforced. This was also the case in Germany in October 2011 when Transport Minister Ramsauer threatened to make helmets compulsory for cyclists if the rate of cyclists wearing them did not voluntarily increase to 50%.

The bicycle helmet protects the most important and sensitive part of our body

Although the speed one can reach on a bicycle is limited, no one denies that a good quality and well-fitting helmet can protect arguably the most important and sensitive part of our body - the head - from serious injury in the event of an accident. While wearing a helmet at sporting events is now compulsory for cyclists almost everywhere in the world, there is no general helmet requirement for cyclists in most countries. Some people don't want to wear a helmet because it allegedly doesn't look good, flattens their hair, is uncomfortable or doesn't seem necessary for short distances. The others are strict advocates of compulsory helmets because they protect the head.

The EU found in a study that in 2000, 15% of cyclists in Finland, 16% in the UK, 17% in Sweden, 7% in Switzerland and 6% in Norway voluntarily wore a helmet. In Denmark, 68 % of all children under 5 years of age who rode their parents' bikes wore a helmet. Only 34 % of children between 6 and 9 years old still wore a helmet on their bike. The number of voluntary helmet wearers was down to 5% among 10-25 year olds and a meagre 3% among cyclists over 25.

A bicycle helmet significantly reduces the risk of head and brain injury

Many studies have also been conducted on whether a helmet can effectively protect against head and face injuries. All studies conducted in this direction over the past 15 years in America, Australia and Europe have come to the same conclusion, namely that helmets can effectively reduce the risk of sustaining dangerous head and brain injuries. Critics of these studies, however, point out that a reduction in fatal cycling accidents and head injuries could also be due to the fact that the absolute number of cyclists on the road has also decreased as a result of compulsory helmets. In view of the fact that cycling makes a considerable contribution to general health and that this contribution more than outweighs any possible risk of injury, the legislator naturally wants to prevent the number of cyclists from decreasing as a result of a general helmet requirement. Furthermore, there is a broader debate about whether wearing a helmet is the best way to improve cyclist safety. In the Netherlands, there is an alternative approach to this issue. Making helmets compulsory - according to the Dutch government and cyclists' associations - runs counter to the government's intention, which is primarily to prevent accidents and get people to switch from cars to bikes to do something for their health. Attempts to promote the wearing of helmets must not lead to citizens associating cycling with danger and not getting on their bikes at all.

In the Netherlands, only 0.1% of all cyclists wear a helmet. However, there are significantly more cyclists on the road than here in Germany and yet there are significantly fewer accidents. Why is that? First of all, cyclists in the Netherlands are not exotic, but equal road users. In addition, there is an extremely well-developed network of paths for cyclists in the Netherlands.

The best helmet is no use if it fits incorrectly

And yet, despite all the discussions about the pros and cons of a general helmet obligation, even helmet opponents do not deny that a bicycle helmet can protect the head from injury if it fits properly. Cheap helmets from discount stores that are not adjusted to the rider's head size or are pushed far into the neck are counterproductive. In fact, they can do more harm than good. Even the best helmet can do more harm than good.

Even the best helmet is no use if it is the wrong size or not properly adjusted. A good bicycle helmet must offer sufficient shock absorption and good ventilation. What good is good shock absorption if the helmet offers no or only insufficient ventilation. Who wants to cook their head in the sun or have their vision worsened by sweat in their eyes.

A good bicycle helmet may not protect you from accidents, but at least it keeps the consequences of accidents as low as possible. Before you buy a new bicycle helmet, you should take a look at the latest test results from Stiftung Warentest on the subject of helmets. In its tests, Stiftung Warentest applies much higher criteria than the legislator itself. Also, Stiftung Warentest is a company-independent institution, so you can assume that the results are objectively correct. However, for the helmet to help, it is important that it is not only bought, but also used. And also on short journeys, on the way to work or school, and not just on longer bike rides.

Bike helmets can also be fashionable and hip

Children still put on a helmet without complaint when their parents tell them to. But by puberty at the latest, a helmet must also fit in with the rest of the style and outfit so that a young person wears a helmet without complaint. In addition to the typical racing helmets, the bicycle helmet market now also offers many headgear with fashionable decorations whose shape is based on BMX, skateboard or baseball helmets. The current helmet fashion scores with fresh looks and a wide range of patterns, from discreet to extravagant and playful to martial tones, so that every cyclist should find something suitable.
