Experienced cyclists and more and more recreational cyclists swear by the onion layer principle when it comes to their cycling clothing. The cycling clothing worn directly on the body - usually the functional vest - transports moisture away from the body to the outside and keeps the body pleasantly dry. The second layer - the cycling jersey - warms and insulates the body, and the outer layer - the cycling jacket - protects the cyclist from rain, wind and snow.

Functional vests wick sweat away from the body

The importance of adequate cycling clothing is shown not least by the layer that comes into direct contact with the skin. Why not put it to the test? Put on a functional vest under a cotton garment and go for a spin on your bike. You will quickly notice how much sweat is transferred away from the body to the outside. If you had chosen a cotton vest as the bottom layer of your cycling clothing, it would stick to your body like a damp rag and sooner or later you would start to feel cold despite your increased body temperature. For this purpose, many manufacturers make use of the so-called capillary effect. They use two fibres of different thicknesses to produce the functional clothing. There are thicker fibres on the inside of the cycling clothing than on the outside. This means that the outer layer has a larger surface area, creating a capillary drop that transports moisture and sweat away from the body to the outside. This allows sweat to evaporate quickly and prevents unpleasant odours from developing in the first place.

But the most important piece of cycling clothing next to the helmet is and remains the cycling shorts, because they are a sensitive point of contact between man and machine. The range of legwear for cyclists is large: from tight-fitting road cycling shorts to casually wide shorts and casual trekking shorts with separate inner pants, the cycle clothing market offers everything a cyclist's heart desires. If you were an inexperienced cyclist and wore jeans and pants, you will certainly remember the aches and pains on your backside. While recreational cyclists and people who ride to work usually wear normal street shoes or trainers, mountain bikers and road cyclists ride with special cycling shoes that they can snap into their clipless pedals - also known casually as clickies. The advantage of a firm connection between shoe and pedal is more efficient power transmission. You can not only pedal, but also pull. Furthermore, cycling shoes offer a better grip and greater safety on unpaved paths, as you cannot slip off and your foot has a defined position on the pedal.
