Besides the saddle, the handlebars of the bicycle have a significant influence on the sitting position and thus on the rider's comfort. Therefore, you should not choose the bicycle handlebars according to their appearance, but rather depending on what you intend to do with the bike.

Every cyclist can find the right handlebars for their individual needs

A large selection of different handlebar widths, handlebar heights and offsets guarantees that every cyclist will find something to suit their individual needs. Whether straight or curved, every rider must be able to trust their handlebars absolutely. That's why you should replace your handlebars immediately if you notice cracks, deep scratches or even cracks on the surface.

Road handlebars provide less air resistance.

Riders who ride their bikes a lot and fast on the road usually have road bike handlebars fitted. Road handlebars allow for a lower and more aerodynamic riding position than would be the case with a straight handlebar shape. True to the motto that it is not the mountain but the air resistance that is the cyclist's worst enemy, every ambitious road cyclist strives to lie as flat and stretched out as possible above the handlebars in order to offer the least surface for air resistance to attack. However, the position should not be too low, otherwise the neck muscles will tense up and the back muscles will become weak and can no longer be used optimally for powerful uphill pedalling. Another advantage of road handlebars is that they allow different grip positions. The rider can switch between lower handlebars and upper handlebars depending on whether or not he or she wants the most aerodynamic riding position possible. Modern racing handlebars are optimally adapted to the human anatomy. The drop and reach of the handlebars match the respective handlebar width.

Saddle height and angle must match the handlebars and their height

If the handlebars are too close or too far away from the body, you may need to replace the stem. However, a suboptimal seating position is often not due to an incorrect handlebar position, but to the saddle height or saddle angle. So before you replace the handlebar stem, you should check the saddle adjustment.

For everyday riding, it is advisable to mount the handlebars and saddle at approximately the same height. If you like it sportier and want to lie as flat as possible over the bike, choose a lower handlebar position. However, the handlebars should not be mounted too low either. This would have a negative effect, especially when riding uphill.

Independently of the handlebar shape, it should be noted that stems and handlebars must have the same clamping dimension. Otherwise they must not be combined for safety reasons. Also, handlebars made of aluminium must not be combined with stems made of steel, otherwise there is a risk of breakage.

Handlebar shapes are offered with different widths and offsets

The handlebars fitted to trekking bikes, mountain bikes, cross bikes and city bikes usually have a straight handlebar shape. The handlebar width depends not only on the intended use and riding style, but also on the rider's shoulder width. Therefore, most manufacturers offer handlebar shapes with different widths and offsets. This offers the buyer the possibility to adjust the width or the grip angle to his individual anatomy.

The weight must not reduce the stability

It goes without saying that handlebars, no matter how light they are, must be extremely robust and durable in order to withstand the rigours of everyday biking. Mountain bike handlebars and downhill handlebars in particular must be extremely resilient. Low weight must therefore not come at the expense of stability, after all, these handlebars have to survive tours on even the toughest trails.

The handlebars must fit the bike

The handlebars fitted to a Dutch bike are in a class of their own. A classic Dutch bike would be simply unimaginable without handlebars that curve towards the rider. The look would be gone and so would the comfortable seating position. Equally unimaginable, of course, would be this "oval handlebar" on a sporty cross bike. Because the handlebars and stem must of course also match the style of the bike.

A must for every triathlete is the triathlon handlebar. When every second counts, you need the right handlebar attachment. A triathlon handlebar allows for a particularly low and at the same time comfortable riding position. The forearms rest comfortably on the shock-absorbing pads, the arm and back muscles are relieved and the aerodynamic posture offers little surface for the wind to attack. An immense advantage when seconds are at stake.
