In contrast to bicycle accessories, bicycle parts are necessary components of a bicycle. You can ride your bike without accessories, but not without bike parts.

Let's start with the two bike parts that probably make the biggest difference to a bike ride - the handlebars and the saddle. Apart from the pedals, the handlebars and the saddle are the points of contact through which the rider experiences and feels his bike. Therefore, these two bicycle parts are of immense importance.

To avoid neck pain, the right handlebars are a must

Bike handlebars made of steel, aluminium, carbon and titanium come in all shapes, widths and weights. Shape and material depend first of all on the type of bike. Road bike handlebars, for example, differ considerably from handlebars on mountain or trekking bikes. Both types of handlebars usually consist of a more or less curved handlebar bar and a stem that connects the bar to the bicycle fork. While the handlebars used on trekking, city and mountain bikes usually have straight touring handlebars that allow a single sitting position, road bikes have curved handlebars that allow several sitting positions. Regardless of the handlebar shape, the height and distance to the saddle are crucial for the rider's sitting posture and comfort. Choosing the wrong handlebars can result in significant neck pain. A bicycle saddle that fits the rider's anatomy is arguably the most important bike part of all on a bike.

What the shoe is to the jogger, the saddle is to the cyclist

If the jogger's shoe is too small and pinches, no matter how modern it is, running becomes a pain. It is the same with the saddle. If this part of the bike is too hard or too soft, too narrow or too wide, sooner or later the buttocks will hurt and the bike ride will be no fun. The shape of the saddle therefore depends not only on the intended use, but also on the rider's buttocks, whereby the shape of the saddle in itself says nothing about its comfort. Especially when it comes to saddle choice, competent advice helps if you are unsure about which saddle to choose.

The third area of contact between rider and bike is the pedals

Let's move on to the third part of the bike through which the rider is in direct contact with the bike: the pedal. Pedals come in different designs depending on the area of use. The most common are block pedals. They consist of a pedal body made of sheet steel and more or less profiled rubber or hard plastic blocks. These standard pedals are usually equipped with front and rear reflectors so that the rider can be easily recognised by other road users even in the dark. The disadvantage to the pedals described below is that no tractive forces can be transmitted with these standard pedals. In addition to this standard bicycle part, there are three other pedal designs. Hook or strap pedals have a cage made of plastic or metal into which the cyclist's foot is inserted and additionally fastened with a strap. The advantage of clipless pedals is that the rider can ride with any shoe. Clipless pedals have a binding into which you snap your special shoes and are thus firmly connected to the bike. Combination pedals have a binding like clipless pedals on one side and a smooth surface for normal shoes on the other side. The advantage is that you are not fixed to a particular type of shoe, the disadvantage is that the rider always has to laboriously turn the pedals to the right side for the type of shoe being worn when riding. So-called "bear paws" are fitted to BMX bikes and dirt bikes. They have a larger shape than standard pedals and have metal claws not unlike a bear's paw. They are extremely grippy and provide the necessary grip for rough terrain.

"Brake later and you'll go faster for longer"

Almost every cyclist has heard this casual saying, as if a brake is not particularly important. On the contrary - bicycle brakes are extremely important bicycle parts. It is no coincidence that they are mandatory for a roadworthy bicycle according to the StVZO. Based on the direction of force, a distinction is made between radially acting drum brakes and axially acting disc and rim brakes. If the point of application is taken as the starting point, a distinction is made between hub brakes (disc and drum brakes) and rim brakes. Rim brakes are the bicycle parts that are most frequently installed on bicycles. With rim brakes, a braking effect is created by friction between the brake pads and the rim. The coaster brake is a drum brake. Children's and city bikes often have a coaster brake. It is low-maintenance, robust and easier to operate, especially for children, than a rim or disc brake operated by a handlebar-mounted lever. Which brings us to a bicycle part of more recent development history - the disc brake. In contrast to the rim brake, the disc brake has a better braking effect, requires less maintenance and lasts longer. Also, the rim does not get hot when riding downhill. But as with many things in life, personal taste and price are ultimately the deciding factors.

Without the bicycle tyre, we would be walking instead of riding

Another important bicycle part, without which literally nothing would run, is the bicycle tyre. If you put a road bike next to a mountain bike, one thing is immediately obvious: the tyres are totally different. While the road bike tyre is extremely narrow and has little or no tread to keep rolling resistance as low as possible, the mountain bike tyre is wide and chunky to ensure the best possible grip on uneven terrain. The tyres of a road bike also differ from those of a mountain bike in terms of diameter. Mountain bikes are usually equipped with 26-inch tyres, although in the recent past more and more top athletes are turning to larger tyres. The mountain biker Sabine Spitz opted for the new tyre size of 27.5 inches at the Olympic Games in London. She was rewarded with the silver medal. Even larger tyres of 29 inches are finding more and more fans among mountain bikers. They roll better over bumps, but cannot accelerate as fast as the smaller tyres. Since 29-inch tyres must of course also be fitted to bikes with larger frames, this tyre size is not recommended for people under 180 cm tall, however. In road bike tyres, the trend is away from extremely inflated narrow tyres towards somewhat wider tyres of 2.4 - 2.5 cm width, whose rolling behaviour is pleasant to ride even at a pressure of less than 5 bar. Hobby cyclists in particular prefer to use slightly wider tyres because of the riding comfort.

Hub gears or derailleur gears?

Lastly, we come to another bicycle part that divides opinions: Hub gears or derailleur gears. For the inexperienced rider, the hub gears are certainly more convenient and easier to operate. You can shift gears with a lever and don't have to do without the coaster brake you are used to on children's bikes. In the past, there were only 3-speed hub gears, but the market now also offers hub gears with more gears (e.g. 14-speed hub gears from Rohloff). On a bike with a derailleur of 27 or 30 gears, you can't use them all. Many settings are (almost) the same, and some should not be used because the chain would then run too obliquely and in the worst case would come off. The important thing with derailleur gears is not the number of gears, but the smallest and the largest gear. The smallest gear determines the suitability for mountain biking and the largest gear determines the maximum speed. Therefore, the difference between an 8- or 11-speed hub gear and a 27- or 30-speed derailleur is not only in the mountain capability, but especially in the fine tuning. Since touring riders and sporty riders place more value on fine gearing, they will usually prefer derailleur gears. A hub gear does not require much maintenance. You should therefore consider choosing a bike with low-maintenance hub gears for commuting to work or shopping. Derailleur gears are recommended for sporty bikes (also for trekking bikes). These gears have a wide gear ratio and are also fun to ride uphill. However, they require more care and have a higher wear rate. However, such a noble bicycle part as the 14-speed hub gear by Rohloff is also designed for sporty use and requires very little maintenance. But it also has a high price. However, if you consider the costs that a derailleur causes through wear over the years, the extra expense for a Rohloff hub gear can be well worthwhile.

Small bicycle parts are also very important

The list of bicycle parts could be extended many times over. However, the "normal" bicycle buyer first buys a complete bicycle. He only thinks about bicycle parts such as "stems" when the handlebars seem too low or the distance between handlebars and saddle is not right. Bicycle parts like spokes only play a role when a spoke breaks. The same applies to small bicycle parts like nipples and valves. It is only when you realise that the air pump does not have a suitable attachment for the bike's valve that you realise how important even small bicycle parts can be.
