Who doesn't know this - you have a super great bike that is adjusted to your body size, the handlebars are the right height and the saddle position is also correctly adjusted, and yet after a few kilometres you notice how your neck muscles tense up and gradually start to ache unpleasantly. Every movement of the head hurts and cycling is actually no longer any real fun.

When the neck muscles become tense and painful while riding

In such cases, the distance between the saddle and the handlebars is often incorrect. In this case, a different handlebar stem or a different inclination of the handlebar stem can help. Just a few centimetres more or less distance between handlebar and saddle can make the difference. Bikes with a short handlebar stem are easier to lift and steer. Many mountain bikers and downhill riders therefore prefer such a short stem. Touring bikes, on the other hand, are usually equipped with a longer stem. High-quality stems can be quickly and easily installed, adjusted and set to the rider's individual seating position. The height and angle of inclination can usually be adjusted in seconds with just one tool. Even non-professionals can change the handlebars in no time at all. Handlebar stems whose angle of inclination can be adjusted in stages are often accused of being less stable and heavier, but they do score points in terms of individual adjustment to the rider's wishes.

If you want to change the handlebars, you can do so with just one tool.

If you want to adapt a bike to different riders, you should get a stem that can be adjusted without tools. If you already have a suitable handlebar stem but need even more height, a stem extension is recommended. In combination with a stem, you can achieve an even more upright and relaxed riding position with a stem extension.

Stems and handlebars must have the same clamping dimension

By the way, stems can be adapted to smaller outer diameters using reducing bushes. This is because only stems and handlebars that have the same clamping dimension may be combined with each other. According to the manufacturer, for safety reasons, aluminium stems should be replaced after 2 years or 5000 km at the latest. All safety-relevant parts should also be replaced after a fall.

When installing a new handlebar stem, please note that every stem with internal clamping has a marking up to which it must be installed at least in the steerer tube. If this mark is no longer visible on an installed stem, everything is in order. However, if it is still visible, the stem is not far enough into the steerer tube and there is a risk that the material will be overloaded and, in the worst case, break. If you notice that the stem is too small, therefore, either choose a longer stem or - if, for example, the offspring is gradually getting too big for the children's or youth bike - go straight for a bike with the next larger frame geometry and a larger tyre diameter.

There are suitable stems for every budget

When it comes to price, the range of handlebar stems is extremely wide. Aluminium stems are available for less than 20 euros. For handlebar stems made of ultra-light carbon fibre, however, you can easily pay 3-digit sums. But for that you get a super light but nevertheless super stable and stiff stem. The inner shell of these high-tech stems is slightly roughened and guarantees a perfect symbiosis between handlebar and fork made of carbon.
