The racing bike was originally designed for purely sporting use (cycle racing). Unlike a mountain bike, trekking bike or city bike, a road bike has narrow rims and narrow tyres with little to no tread. It is equipped with a racing handlebar (handlebars), which allows for several seating positions. Furthermore, a road bike is characterised by an extremely low weight, as it is deliberately equipped in a minimalist manner. Racing bikes have neither mudguards nor a luggage rack. No racing cyclist would even think of equipping his racing bike with a side stand. Even lights and bells are not included because of the additional weight.

Gear derailleur, rim brakes and lightweight construction: the features of today's racing bikes

For fine-tuning on hills, all road bikes have derailleurs with two (34-50, 39-53 teeth) or three chainrings (30-39-52 teeth). Mechanical rim brakes still have preference over disc brakes. When it comes to saddle height, it is noticeable that it is usually higher than the handlebar height, because the riding position on a road bike is different than on any other type of bike. The frame of a road bike has the shape of a triangle (diamond frame) and is made of either steel, aluminium, carbon or titanium. Each material offers advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately, the choice of material determines the weight and price of the road bike. So you have decided to buy a (new) road bike and want to test ride a few bikes. You know which frame size is right for you. You have studied test reports on gears, brakes and frame material and now want to test ride potential candidates. So that you can make a comparison that is as objective as possible, we will give you a few helpful tips below on what you should consider before and during such a test ride with a new road bike.

Important tips for buying a road bike

To make sure you return the road bike you are going to test ride, they might ask to see your ID card or driving licence. Another thing you should not forget is your helmet. Many shops prefer you to wear a helmet during the test ride. After all, they don't want you to come to any harm with the new and for you still unfamiliar road bike. If you already have a bike with clipless pedals, you should also take your cycling shoes with you. If the cycling shoes are something exotic, then you should also bring the clipless pedals yourself. Have them fitted to your new road bike. You should also not forget the right cycling clothes. After all, you want to feel comfortable during the test ride and not be distracted by uncomfortable clothing or unfamiliar footwear. You have probably already informed yourself in advance about potential racing bikes and therefore know which racing bikes and which brands you would like to try out. The test bikes therefore have the right frame size for you and are also equipped with the handlebars you want. Make sure that the test bikes are properly adjusted: First of all, the saddle of the tested road bikes must be correctly adjusted. This applies to both the saddle height and the saddle angle. The tip of the saddle should be level with the back of the saddle. Even tiny incorrect adjustments can have extreme effects on riding comfort. Once you have determined the saddle height, measure it so that you can more quickly adjust the saddle height of the other road bikes you still want to test ride. When you sit on the road bike, experienced salespeople can usually tell immediately whether the handlebar stem is the ideal height or would need to be adjusted higher, lower or at a different angle for you. It is in the seller's best interest that the handlebar stem of the road bike is adjusted to your individual needs, because if you do not feel comfortable, you will not buy the road bike. Have the tyres of the road bike fully inflated. This is almost more important than the right saddle height. Imagine first trying a high quality carbon road bike with insufficiently inflated tyres and then a less expensive road bike with fully inflated tyres. Three guesses which road bike would go faster. It is possible that many sellers check the tyre pressure by pressing briefly on the tyre with their fingers and then saying it is okay. Insist that the tyre pressure is checked. Then ask the salesperson to briefly explain the gears of the road bike to you if you are not familiar with them yet. This will also help you to determine whether the gears are set correctly. This is followed by the actual test ride on the road bike, which is still unfamiliar to you. You could distinguish between the following test scenarios: The classic test ride is the short lap in the customer car park, the lap around the block of houses or the 5 km test ride on the road. The round in the car park makes sense because the salesperson can check again whether you are sitting correctly on the road bike. However, since you also want to know how the road bike feels at higher speeds, you should extend your test ride. Either go for a spin around the block or take a longer ride. You are not the only cyclist who feels more comfortable on the bike unobserved. This test ride on the road bike would be optimal if it offered different conditions, i.e. good road surface and bad road surface, uphill and downhill sections, headwind, tailwind and crosswind. Maybe you have already fallen in love with the road bike. Test other bikes anyway. Again, make sure you have the right seat height and seat adjustment. Also have the tyres of the next bike you want to try inflated. Remember that the gears of the second test bike could also be out of adjustment. You can find this out by having this gear system explained to you again. If you are unsure whether you, as a layman, can compare the different road bikes at all, don't worry.

Pay particular attention to the following:

How does the tested road bike accelerate in a sitting and standing position? How does the road bike behave on bumpy terrain? What does your gut tell you on rough road surfaces? If you have the opportunity to do a longer test ride with the road bike, ride up a mountain. Why? Quite simply, riding uphill in particular separates the wheat from the chaff. A really good road bike tailored to your personal needs will almost let itself be ridden uphill, even if you should shift gears. With a "distant" road bike, you will always be searching for the right gear.
